Mazeru Nozomu (Japanese: のぞむ 混ぜる; MA-zeh-roo NO-zo-moo; born June 23 2000), is a Japanese smoothie business owner.[1] Additionally, Nozomu is known for being Hope's Peak University's first Ultimate Smoothie Maker.[2]
Nozomu was born as the fourth child of his parents Hanagasumi and Arai Nozomu in Osaka, Japan. Nozomu reports being slightly vitamin deficient as a child, often eating supplemental vitamin gummies and drinking pre-packaged smoothies to aid with said deficiency. However, he claims that his interest in making his own smoothies didn't start until his older brother, the former Ultimate Coffee Artisan Jouzu Nozomu, started experimenting with brewing coffees, when Nozomu was six years old.[3]
Nozomu stated in an interview in 2022 that, "[He] didn't like the scent of coffee that much, and it made [him] feel slightly nauseous. [He] only felt better after [he] drank a pre-packaged smoothie, and it sort of spiraled from there."[3]
Nozomu's family legacy is notable for being responsible for sending currently eleven family members to Hope's Peak University on Ultimate scholarships.[2][3] In Nozomu's immediate family, there are his brothers:
In his extended family, Nozomu is the first cousin of the Kiuiru Sisters:
No one in the Nozomu family prior to this generation has been an Ultimate.[2][3]
Nozomu operates primarily from his business, Mixer Madness Smoothies, through a portable food truck.[1] Nozomu purchased the truck in the United States when he was sixteen with the help of his then-Ultimate brother, Jouzu, on a trip to North America to meet with a select group of coffee artisans and manufacturers.[1][3]
Nozomu traveled with his brother across the United States in the truck, selling his smoothies while he completed his compulsory education online. After reaching eighteen, Nozomu earned his driver's license and began traveling by himself across North and South America, starting in Newfoundland, Canada, and ending up in Rio Grande, Brazil.[3]
Upon request, Nozomu would also cater to parties outside of his wandering route, with some notable clients being Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Gwyneth Paltrow, Guy Fieri, and Kourtney Kardashian, but more often, Nozomu's fame stems from the lengths to which he will go to provide people with affordable, delicious, healthy smoothies.[1][4][5][6][7] In an interview conducted in 2022, Nozomu announced that his next area of travel after graduation is to be in Eastern Europe, the Caucuses, and the Middle East.[3]
The branding of Mixer Madness Smoothies is that, "The mixes will make you reach Heaven itself", which has led to some minor controversy from non-denominational clients in the United States, Canada, and Brazil.[1][8] In a conversation with Atlanta, Georgia's local drink blogger Kirsten Sevig, Nozomu calmly clarified that, "the word 'heaven' is translated directly from Japanese, and has no relationship to a specific denomination's 'heaven'".[8] Sevig later published a raving review about Mixer Madness Smoothies on Yelp and her personal blog with excerpts of the conversation attached, resolving the controversy and increasing Nozomu's business.[8][9]
Nozomu's smoothies made it to the front cover of the New York Times in the winter of 2019, when Nozomu managed to sell smoothies that "cured" people's cold and flu symptoms within a matter of hours.[10] Research conducted on Nozomu's smoothies concluded that while the vitamin strength used in them was more potent than usually palatable, their effectiveness at rallying the immune system was unmistaken.[10][11] Following his recognition, Nozomu and his reputation were thoroughly examined before an invitation to Hope's Peak was extended. Nozomu is now in his second year at Hope's Peak University as of October 1st.[2]
Further research on Nozomu's smoothie-making technique and the science behind it is being conducted in a collaboration between John's Hopkins University, Monash University, and Hope's Peak University.[10]
