Faith Samantha Harmon (/feɪθ səˈmnθə ˈhhrmən/FAY-th sah-MAN-tha HAR-monn; born January 12 2003), is an American two-time lottery winner and multimillionaire[1][2][3]. She is additionally the current Ultimate Lucky Person at Hope's Peak University, and is the 108th holder of the title.[1][4][5]
Harmon was born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to Eleanor and Rhett Harmon, under unusual weather conditions.[1] Typically, South Dakota experiences its tornado season starting at the end of April and ending in mid-October, but a rare January tornado initially mistaken as a blizzard took place nearby when Harmon was born. Harmon's mother was evacuated to a safe room in Avera Health Hospital in order to give birth safely during these conditions.
However, weather conditions were not the only complications involved with Harmon's birth. Reportedly, Harmon was nearly choked to death exiting the womb, as her umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck during delivery.[1] The cord was removed and Harmon's life was saved, however, she spent the first few weeks of her life in the hospital being monitored for any lingering damage from the incident.[1] No complications were reported to be found.
Suffocation would not be Harmon's only early experience with near-death experiences or luck. As of October 1st, 2023, Harmon has reported experiencing twenty one major lucky and unlucky events.[1]
In September of 2003, Harmon returned to Avera Health Hospital less than eight months after her release with a near-fatal case of pneumonia.[1] Harmon was hospitalized for eighteen days for intensive care, recovering from most symptoms after this period aside from a lingering cough.
Between this period and 2007, not much else about Harmon's life is known. Harmon's older brother, Dave Harmon, has reportedly said that Harmon was found nearly electrocuting herself as a toddler, but no hospital records are recorded to match this incident.[4]
In March of 2007, Harmon and her brother were tasked with feeding the family horses.[6] Harmon's brother describes the day as, "[It was] a miserable day, with fog blocking out everything. The rain was cold and drizzly, and Faith wouldn't stop complaining about not getting to wear the old rain boots that she'd outgrown. I didn't want to be there at all."[6] Harmon and her brother both would go on to describe finding a bullsnake in the grass while feeding the horses, which spooked the horses into nearly trampling Harmon.[1][6] While shaken, Harmon was unharmed.
In October of 2008, Harmon's house caught fire due to a short circuit in the guest room next to hers.[1][6] While the house was reduced to only the foundation, Harmon was found asleep alive and unharmed, by firefighters when they reached her burning room.[7] Harmon was treated for mild smoke inhalation by emergency services, but suffered no burns or sustained damage.[1][6][7]
In April 2009, Harmon was nearly hit by a medium-sized passenger bus on her walk to school.[1] The driver swerved in time to hit a nearby building rather than Harmon, which, while trapping her temporarily under rubble, did not injure her aside from a broken arm and mild concussion.[1][8] While trapped in the rubble, Harmon discovered an old envelope that had been hidden in the walls, containing 10 U.S. war bonds dated back to 1942.[1][9] When exchanged, their worth was calculated to be $943.50 USD.[8][9]
In June 2011, on a family trip to Mankato, Minnesota, Harmon and her family visited a historical re-enactment site named "Pilgrim Town".[1][6] Pilgrim Town, founded in 1963, was a fairly successful theme park with a focus on "telling the pilgrim's tales" through the use of a reproduction wooden town, costumes, and thematically-appropriate merchandise.[10] However, after finishing a foil-wrapped ice cream sandwich from the gift shop, Harmon was found indirectly responsible for Pilgrim Town's destruction.[11]
Harmon and other park goers were evacuated when a flame was spotted consuming the wall of a building, which quickly engulfed the entire park before firefighters could arrive.[11] No one was hurt in the incident. Investigators eventually determined that Pilgrim Town had been burnt by a flame initiated by Harmon's foil wrapper, tossed on the ground in the perfect position to catch the sun and start a small flame on a pile of hay nearby.[11] Harmon and her family were not charged for any damages, though they would be banned from Pilgrim Town and any affiliated parks permanently.[1][6][10][11]
In October of 2012, Harmon was tasked with making copies of a worksheet by her teacher. However, when she reached the printer, Harmon reports finding it "stuck", refusing to print any new copies. Harmon claims she "only pressed a few buttons" when the printer started to shake and smoke, exploding moments later.[1][12] Harmon suffered mild injuries from the shrapnel and blast, and only spent three days in the hospital for recovery.[12]
In July of 2014, Harmon visited "The Polished Mirror", an antique store in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, with some friends. Amongst buying a few articles of clothing, Harmon also bought a costume jewelry necklace for $5 USD, not thinking much about it at the time. However, upon wearing the necklace to an event a few months later, Harmon was informed that it was possibly worth more than she expected.[1] With some research, it turned out to be a piece made by the late sculptor Rita Bergamot in 1932, valued at $400,000 USD.[13] Harmon happily sold the piece.[1][13]
In September of 2014, Harmon attended a county fair with friends.[1] After being strapped into a roller coaster car on "the Thunderbolt", Harmon's car was derailed at a speed of 40 miles per hour. Harmon, among 15 others, was injured, with Harmon suffering the most severe injuries out of the surviving victims.[14][15] Harmon was treated for severe damage to her arms, collarbone, ribs, back, legs, and face at Avera Health Hospital.[15] Despite the intensity and extent of her injuries however, Harmon miraculously made a full recovery after eight months, and was returned to a similar state following five months of physical therapy.[1]
In June of 2016, Harmon was randomly given a fluke scholarship to the University of Vermont worth $80,000 USD.[1][6] Harmon, thirteen years old at the time, had not applied to the university, but her winning was validated as official after intense scrutiny.[1] Harmon's family was able to receive half the promised scholarship in cash in exchange for their confusion and time spent on the event.[1][6]
In November of 2016, Harmon was taking a walk through her hometown of Worthing, South Dakota, taking photos of the Thanksgiving decorations on one of the buildings.[1] What Harmon was unaware of is that her photo would play a crucial role in solving the disappearance of eight year old Robert Charleston two weeks later, when her photo of the very store captured Robert in a conversation with his eventually-determined kidnapper, Issac Roscoe. Harmon reportedly was very cooperative with the police throughout the entire process.[16]
In March of 2017, Harmon was trapped in her high school's recreation shed during a blizzard.[1] Harmon reported that icicles fell in front of the door, trapping her inside for 47 hours before she was rescued. Harmon was found unconscious at the time of her rescue and was declared clinically dead before a team of paramedics was able to revive her. Harmon suffered heavily from frostbite, hypothermia, dehydration, and post-recovery pneumonia, but she did eventually return to near perfect health after surgery to remove dead tissue and extremities suffering from necrosis.[1][17]
In October of 2018, Harmon was present in the bathroom of The Oink Joint Barbecue, a pork barbeque themed restaurant, when the piping for all of the sinks suddenly burst.[1] Harmon and the restaurant were both drenched, and by the time the water flow could be cut off, the restaurant had been partially flooded with $35,000 USD in damages. Harmon and her family were sued for damages, but given that security footage had proof that Harmon was only present at the time of the burst, no charges ended up sticking.[1][6][18]
In February of 2019, Harmon had been driving on I-29 towards Sioux Falls with her older brother, Dave Harmon, when logs fell off of a transport vehicle and onto the interstate.[1][6][19][20][21] Harmon, who had been driving at the time of the incident, managed to swerve around the logs in such a fashion that physicists have declared nearly impossible, making it so that the car didn't have even a single scratch on it when the accident was fatal for others. Harmon and her brother were still inspected for trauma, but were quickly released after passing a superficial examination.[1][6][19]
In August 2020, Harmon pulled off of a single-lane dirt road to check out a piece of paper on the roadside. When she returned to the vehicle and tried to start the engine, however, she found the battery had died with no chance of getting a jump from anywhere reliable for miles. Harmon called her father for assistance and was awaiting his arrival when a thunderstorm blew into the area, sending a lightning bolt to strike her car and revive the engine miraculously. While the car maintained cosmetic damage from the strike, Harmon was able to return home safely.[1][6]
In January of 2021, Harmon jokingly bought a Mega Millions lottery ticket with her brother Dave on her birthday. While Dave's ticket was a fluke, Harmon's turned out to be a winning ticket worth $208,000,000 dollars.[1][2][6] The following week, Harmon bought another lottery ticket from the same convenience store and ended up with another winning ticket, this time valued at $705,550 USD.[1][3]
In February of 2021, Harmon was visiting Tokyo for a tour of Hope's Peak University as a prospective student.[1][6] As she was traveling to campus, she used Ochiai Station as an intermediary during her commute, and was caught as a victim in the horrific Ochiai Station Derailing of February 2021.[1][6][22] Harmon suffered heavy lacerations and mild trauma from shattered glass and shrapnel in the incident, but was treated after being rushed to the ER for emergency surgery.[1] In an interview shortly after the incident, Harmon reported that, "[The smell of blood] was the worst part. That and the screaming. [She] couldn't understand anything else, but [she] understood that."[23]
In May of 2020, the mail truck carrying the 108th Lucky Person's admissions letter was reportedly sent to Eritrea, but the person who received the letter accidentally included it in a care package that she sent to relatives living in Detroit, Michigan.[24] Her relatives found the care package without issue, but claim to have missed the letter amongst the bubble-wrapping and paper for padding. The box was supposedly sent to be broken down and recycled, but an unknown source picked up the cardboard for it to eventually fly out of the flattened box onto the roadside.[24][25]
In August of 2020, Harmon, traveling with Dave out back to her family's farm, spotted the paper and insisted that Dave stop, saying that she "had a good feeling".[1][6] In picking up the envelope, she realized what it was, and immediately contacted Hope's Peak to confirm that it was legitimate.[1] It was, and Faith was enrolled as the Ultimate Lucky Student. She is currently in her third year there as of October 1st, 2023.[1][4]
While at Hope's Peak University, Harmon is most notably known for her rumored secret relationship with Roger Lindsey, though neither parties have confirmed this. Rumors of this relationship sprouted up after arguments resembling that of a break-up sprouted up between the two in increasing frequency over a duration of several days in late July of 2023.[26]
